ITALY

I can’t say I am an expert, but I am beyond the novice.

From a very young age I loved Italy and wanted to know everything about the place. I took a short break in my teens and twenties to be obsessed with Greece, but came back when I turned 30.

I was in an in between phase of life and was ready for the adventure of a lifetime, but also didn’t have any money. How do you move to another country without any money and stay there for a while? Become and Au Pair.

I lived with a family with three little girls in a little village outside of Verona in the north. I took Italian classes, helped make dinners and traveled on the weekends. I made friends and bottled wine and would take a train to Lago di Garda for a few hours on hot summer days. I folded laundry, learned to make the best tiramisu, danced in the streets during a festival and was told my Italian accent was good.

What makes me qualified for giving you tips? I learned the trains and the buses and even the planes. Being able to tell the bus driver that he missed I walked around cities not knowing where I was going, but could make my way back home at the end of the day. My goal was to see the tourist places AND experience true Italian culture. Hence, bottling wine in an underground garage with my non-English speaking neighbors. I want you to fall in love with Italy just like I have.

GREECE

If you read the little blurb about Italy, then you will know that I became obsessed with Greece in my teens and twenties. It started my freshman year of high school when I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip with my church to Greece. I went one summer, then the two summers after that. I then decided that I was going to go to college to teach English as a second language in Greece and live my little Mama Mia life. So I chose a school that taught Greek. It wasn’t until I got there that I realized it was Ancient Greek and was probably not going to help me. I still took two years of the dead language.

By the time my senior year came along, I decided I wanted to work in the music industry in Nashville. (I never did work in the music industry.) This career path change did not change my love for Greece and was able to study abroad for a January term my senior year. I reconnected with old friends and saw parts of Greece I never thought I would see. Like getting locked in a national park and my travel mates thinking I had been swallowed up by the ocean. I was in fact just taking in the sunset and water splashing against the rocks.

I have kept in touch with a few people over the years and when I was living in Italy in 2022, I traveled to Greece for two weeks. The first week was spent with the mission team from my church from my high school days in a town called Larissa. After serving with them, they left and I continued to explore Athens and Santorini.

Side note: I didn’t mention that my bedroom in high school was Greece themed. Blue walls, white furniture, a photo of the acropolis across from my bed and a painting of Santorini above my bed. I couldn’t get enough.

My love for Greece is unmatched. I teared up walking in a local artist shop in Santorini because it was the feeling I had been expecting for 15 years. It met all of my expectations and more. The sheer awe I experienced on the tops of the monasteries in Meteora is something that will never be replaced. I want you to feel this way. Please let me share a little of my love for Greece with you.
